How to Poetry: Thoughts, Rules and Examples

Poetry gets a bad rap. It usually comes into our lives on two occasions, school exams, and a funeral service. The art is a total downer but recently poets have become popular and gangster. Rap stands for rhythm and poetry. Rap is a form of expression and this is shaving off on the younger generation. Maybe it's the humour or artificial emotion but one thing is certain, anyone can create their own masterpiece.

My search to understand; rhyme, set-up, character, emotion, meaning, syllables and performance.

At the beginning of poetry writing I spent hours mulling over themes and rhymes, this is actually perfectly okay so long as the answers come naturally. Discovering rhymes doesn't require dictionaries and I can personally dispel the myth that good rappers should cheat, use a team or need years of experience.

Now coming up to three years in this venture I've certainly exercised my language muscles, project my voice with confidence and lets not get started on memory. This is greatly under appreciated and the only learning curve is to get started soon.

5 Tips to Make Better Poetry:

1. Write as much as possible.
Once you have a couple of paragraphs or pages, editing what you have can greatly improve your work. Advanced techniques you'll pick up on once you invent them. Internal rhymes, pace and intricate meaning.

2. How to make your work funny or interesting.
If you don't have a notepad of ideas then your living in the past. Once the music hits you write it down, humour is hard to create so don't deny the fountain the opportunity to flow. Take advantage of spontaneous creativity as well as methodical.

3. You don't have the words or themes to get started.
The music industry perpetuates the same literary devices. Certain phrases should retire and they don't. What I tend to do is make it sound great, that's all I want to achieve. Let's not complicate my work, simple and bumpy.

4. Your performance doesn't do your work justice.
Alright so you suck. There is a common problem that your work may be great but once you say it out loud, it loses all it's cool. Record your voice until what you have is acceptable. You need a phone, privacy and a metronome beat. After all art deserves to be seen, face your critics.

5. Invent your own rules.
These are things I encountered honing my craft, I know what I have to do to get stuck in from where I left off. So can you.
